What Does Neat Mean?
by Jodi McKenna
What does it mean to apply an essential oil “neat?”
Neat means to “apply an essential oil to your skin undiluted.” Thus, this means that you would not add a carrier oil.
Many therapeutic grade essential oils can be applied topically to your body “neat,” straight from the bottle or undiluted. However, there are a few essential oils that I would NOT recommend you apply neat, such as: Thieves Oil, Clove, Cassia, and sometimes peppermint. These can be hot oils and produce a strong detox reaction. You might feel a burning sensation and notice that your skin turns red. If this is the case, apply your carrier oil (V-6, coconut oil, olive oil, etc.)
Additionally, it is ALWAYS unwise to apply essential oils to your eyes and some of those other areas that we just won’t talk about. These “sensitive” areas are . . . . well . . . sensitive. If you feel you MUST use areas in private areas, PLEASE dilute to avoid an uncomfortable sensation.
Oils I Always Use Neat
- citrus fresh
- peppermint (I know, I told YOU to dilute it.)
- white angelica
